David Farias on his own

David Farias

Tejano veteran, David Farias, who has been around for quite a few years, playing accordion in the “family” band, La Tropa F, to Los Hermanos Farias with his brothers John and Joe, to winning a GRAMMY Award with Los TexManiacs and brother in music, Max Baca, is venturing out on his own, with a new band.

“Right now, it’s just David Faris,” said Farias. “I don’t have any more brothers to play with. It’s just me by myself,” Farias said, chuckling. “I wouldn’t say it’s scary, I would say it’s kind of weird, you know. 36 years you’re together with your brothers in a band, now you’re doing everything on your own.” The only hold-over from the former bands: Lee Perez, who is a percussionist in David Farias’ backing band, who has been around since the early days. Los Hermanos Farias disbanded after John had a heart attack last year, and Joe decided to return to La Tropa F. He split from TexManiacs almost two years ago to revive Hermanos Farias.

Farias will play his old hits, conjunto favorites, as well as some new songs from an upcoming album produced by Gilbert Velasquez for VMB Music Group, including a new single, “Cada Beso Que Me Das,” written by producer/bassist Gabriel Zavala. The bouncy tune is easily found on YouTube.

Zavala played on the new record. So did label co-owner drummer Chente Barrera. Farias is preparing to debut it in Monterrey, Mexico next month. It has been 13 years since he performed there.

His relationship with some of his siblings is admittedly strained. It has been for years. His relationship with Baca post-TexManiacs is strong. Their smiling faces grace the giant poster at Garcia’s Mexican Restaurant on Fredericksburg Road.

The pair performed together in Austin on Father’s Day. “Every once and awhile, we do a little thing, me and Max together. We do stuff like that. The first thing people think of is me and Max.”

Los TexManiacs recently released a new project entitled: “Americano Groove”

Marketing Music using Social Media

Marketing Music using Social Media

We all use social media; but, knowing how to use social media to market a band is a different story.  I know most of you use social media and feel it works great for me.  However, here is the question…Is your social media followers exploding with growth?  We are not talking about reaching 5000 followers on Facebook or 1,000 followers on Twitter or something like that.  We mean EXPLODING! Like 1,000,000 YouTube views, Facebook followers, Twitter Fans, etc… Some will argue it is the industry we are in or we don’t have the funding and I completely understand your apathy.  However, that is just an excuse there is such a thing known as sweat equity. Sweat equity is the investment of time and dedication that can benefit you far more than having excess funding for marketing endeavors.   [click to continue…]

Tejano Market Research Project

Tejano Market Research Project

tejano market research project

I launched the Tejano Market Research Project.  This project is the first of its kind and the goal of the project is to map out and determine the trajectory of the overall market.  The project will take sometime to complete; however, rolling reports of data will be released in rounds.  The project itself will consist of surveys, questionnaires, focus groups, in-person interviews, phone interviews, heat mapping, market testing, product testing and more.  We will use all three levels of research design to obtain as much accurate data as possible.

The Tejano Market Research Project will begins with an Industry Survey.  This survey is for Industry Insiders and people who live the Tejano business life day-to-day.  We must first understand the perspectives of the people in the industry before we can move forward.  Think of it as a machine.  If you do not understand every process and every function of a machine then how can you optimize its performance?  By rooting out any issues, dispelling myths, and looking at hard facts and pure data we can strengthen ourselves and empower growth in the industry.

Once this initial survey is complete and we have the full cooperation of the Industry we will move on to the Fan Survey.  This survey will be distributed to as many of the Fans in the industry as possible.  With this survey we can learn the how fans perceive the industry and the music and make adjustments to provide the experience and enjoyment that they want and need.

Our ultimate goal is to give the fans what they want and together we can find out how to better serve our fans and grow this genre to the giant it was meant to be.

In The Studio Together With Ricky Valenz

Ricky Valenz, Gilbert Velasquez, Ram Herrera and A.B. Quintanilla in the studio

From the looks of Facebook, there were a few people that are in the studio working together! Apparently, at Velasquez Music Studios, there was some magic happening! Ricky Valenz, A.B. Quintanilla, Ramiro “Ram” Herrera and Gilbert Velasquez shared some pictures on their own respective Facebook accounts suggesting that some music could come out of a “certain situation” that occurred over a slight misunderstanding. Kudos to you gentlemen for letting cooler heads prevail Mr. Valenz and Mr. Quintanilla! That doesn’t happen in this day and age, especially in our music that we call tejano! one thing’s for sure, there were a lot of GRAMMY Awards in the studio!

Mary Alanis – El Callejero

This new artist named Mary Alanis has a different voice and something about it makes you enjoy the song.  She brings a new vitality to the industry and has real potential to grow.  The sound of the song is fitting to her voice and is well produced.  The video is great and seems to fit Mary Alanis and her style.  I give this song and video an A+ for matching her vocals and for following the storyboard.  This is a great example of the future of Tejano. Welcome Mary Alanis!

Mary Alanis has released the visual for her debut single, “El Callejero”.

The Ryan Bazan-directed clip is the debut video for the 30-year-old singer originally from Harlingen, now residing in San Antonio.

Alanis was inspired at a young age by Mexican actress and ranchera singer Yolanda Del Rio, as well as Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston and her very own Mom, Martha Alanis, who also sang in a church choir in Harlingen.

The singer-songwriter feels very blessed having a gift for writing music that comes from the heart and is working on realizing her dream of attaining her own success as an accomplished singer. She hopes to tell her life experiences through her music and help mend broken hearts.

Jennifer Lopez pays tribute to Selena

Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lopez

At the Billboard Latin Music Awards in Miami on Thursday night (April 30), Jennifer Lopez made some serious magic happen onstage.

No, she didn’t flaunt her infamous lip-syncing skills or stun us with a promiscuous rendition of “Booty.” Instead, she reprised the movie role that shot her to stardom by paying tribute to Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, who was murdered two decades ago at age 23. Lopez earned rave reviews for her captivating portrayal of the Tejano superstar in the 1997 biopic “Selena,” and last night she continued paying tribute in a stunning way.

Joined by the Quintanilla family band, Los Dinos — which includes Selena’s brother A.B., sister Suzette, and widower Chris Pérez — Lopez charged through a bilingual medley of hits. She opened with “Como La Flor” as a montage of Selena footage played behind her, then moved on to “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom,” “Amor Prohibido,” “I Could Fall in Love,” and “No Me Queda Mas.” The only song that was really missing was “Dreaming of You,” but honestly, that might’ve made the whole thing a little too heartbreaking.

Lopez somehow managed to squeeze in three wardrobe changes in just seven minutes, each outfit appropriately resembling Selena’s flamboyant stage style (bedazzled bustiers and ruffles galore!) She also broke out some of Selena’s most recognizable dance moves, adding up to a performance that was equal parts electric and emotional.

Lopez said in an interview on the “Today” show on Friday morning, “There is only one Selena. And there only ever will be. She’s just one of those special types of artists that — with her music and her spirit and her heart — really touched people. The impact that it had on my life, on my career … It was a great thing for her to be my mentor. And it was a great thing to have her teach me so much about how to navigate this business, but also how to navigate through life.
